     General Suggestions:
 

  • As of December 4th, 1999 up to 67 character domain names can now be purchased versus 23 character domains. This can significantly increase the number of Keywords you can include in a domain name and thereby increase your rankings for those Keywords.

  • WebCrawler and Excite both use very similar scoring systems. Therefore, pages that rank well on Excite will likely do well on WebCrawler if submitted there. However, WebCrawler is thought to maintain a smaller version of the Excite database, so keeping a lot of pages indexed in WebCrawler can be more difficult.

  • Your ranking and the ranking of other sites may be influenced by the link "popularity" of the site. This is determined by how many OTHER Web sites link to your own. The more sites that you can get to link to you, the better!

  • Page popularity on Excite has a big influence on your ranking, along with WHERE these links come from and HOW they are linked to your site.

  • You may be able to improve your ranking on this search engine if you can obtain a review of your site by Excite.

  • Obtaining a domain name with your Keyword in it may significantly affect your score on Excite. Including the Keyword in a sub-directory name or page name can also help, although not as much. Separate multiple words by dashes, underscores, or slashes in the case of sub-directories. Consider purchasing a secondary domain name for this purpose if ranking well on Excite is important to you.

  • In general for Excite, the higher the frequency of Keywords on a page, the better. Therefore, lengthy pages with the Keyword repeated many times in different places in the document can improve your ranking. This rule may be more true for single Keywords than for multi-word phrases.

  • Pages which consist mostly of lots of links with Keywords in some or all of them, along with little other text on the page, often do well. Pages with lots of words and links with Keywords can also do well.

  • Along with using your Keyword at the top of the page, you might consider using your Keyword at least once near the bottom of your page in the Body area. This can help convey an overall "theme" to the page and may improve your score.

  • Since plurals are not recognized as being synonymous by Excite, try to use the plural form of the Keyword in addition to the singular form when possible to capture more potential traffic.


    Suggestions for making your page conform closer to the statistical averages
    for top ranking pages (data vary with number of search keywords):
 

* The keyword frequencies means the number of times ANY of the words in the keyword phrase appear on the page, DIVIDED by the number of words in the phrase.
  • A keyword frequency of 1 is suggested for the Title area.
  • A word count from 5 to 10 is suggested for the Title area.
  • A keyword prominence of at least 55% is suggested for the Title area.
  • A keyword frequency from 1 to 2 is suggested for the Link Text area.
  • A word count from 1 to 132 is suggested for the Link Text area.
  • A keyword prominence of at least 60% is suggested for the Link Text area.
  • A keyword frequency from 1 to 7 is suggested for the Hyperlink Url area.
  • A keyword frequency from 1 to 11 is suggested for the Body Text area.
  • A word count from 250 to 427 is suggested for the Body Text area.
  • A keyword prominence of at least 45% is suggested for the Body Text area.
  • A total frequency from 4 to 21 is suggested for the page as a whole.
  • A total word count from 286 to 544 is suggested for the page as a whole.
  • Note: Excite may penalize for having too many Keywords.
